God’s Electorial Vote

I’m not really concerned about the electoral vote count. Kerry has pulled ahead at the time of this entry.
The reason why I’m not concerned is that ultimately God will decide who will become president (Romans 13:1). I find it funny that the past couple of times in class, the 5th and 6th graders have requested that we pray for George Bush to become president. God Himself is not political. Not Democrat nor Republican. So don’t try to make Him that way.

Mobile Homes

Why do people live in mobile homes? The easy answer is that it is cheap housing. Yet when hurricanes and tornados come through, it’s always the mobile homes that get the most news coverage since even a slight breeze seemingly rips these homes apart. Right now I’m watching MSNBC showing mobile home damage from Hurricane Frances. Florida leads the nation in number of mobile homes. People use it as a second home away from their homes up north.
Yet the danger is much too great to justify saving a little bit of money. Why make a mistake that could cost you your home and all your possessions.

Ronald Reagan dead at the senseless age of 93

Once upon a time, CNN made some premade obits for some people who would probably be dead soon. Reagan was one of them. So I guess CNN and all those other quasi-news organizations can dig out those premade obits for Reagan now.
So let’s compare.
CNN’s premade obit.
CNN’s actual obit.
Compare and contrast them. I expect a full report from each and every one of you Monday morning.
Reagan was good. He’s the first president I remember. I remember my mom pulling me out of my 1st grade class just so that I could stand by and see Reagan’s limo as it made it down the road on his visit to Nashville. Cool stuff.

Bill Cosby Quotes

Here’s the controversal Bill Cosby quotes for those of you who missed them:

“These people are not parenting. They are buying things for kids – $500 sneakers for what? And won’t spend $200 for `Hooked on Phonics.” They’re standing on the corner, and they can’t speak English. I can’t even talk the way these people talk: `Why you ain’t, why you is. ‘… And I blamed the kid until I heard the mother talk. And then I heard the father talk. Everybody knows it’s important to speak English except these knuckleheads.”

Wal-Mart Stampede

This story has been floating around the net for a while now. I’m still intrigued by it. I’m going to post the entire story here because I have a feeling that it will vanish from the web sometime in the next 90 days….and someone needs to archive this for posterity’s sake. Read it and then I’ll let you know what I think.

Woman Knocked Unconscious By Wal-Mart Shoppers
Witnesses: Shoppers Stepped Over Woman Having Seizure

POSTED: 6:39 p.m. EST November 28, 2003
ORANGE CITY, Fla. — A 41-year-old woman was knocked unconscious and then trampled by a mob of shoppers who continued to step over her as she suffered a seizure during a Friday sale at Wal-Mart in Orange City, Fla., according to Local 6 News.
Authorities said that Patricia Van Lester arrived at Wal-Mart at 3 a.m. for an early sale on a DVD player for her mother. When the store’s doors opened at 6 a.m., Van Lester grabbed the DVD player but was quickly overcome by hundreds of shoppers rushing into the store.
The woman was knocked to the ground, slammed her head on the ground and suffered at least one seizure, according to Local 6 News.
Her sister watched the incident and tried to stop the crowd as they made their way to the merchandise.
“I screamed, ‘Stop, don’t step on her, my sister is on the ground,’ and nobody would listen,” the woman’s sister, Linda Ellzey said. “I’ve never seen so many people in a store at one time — in one area. If there was a fire, nobody could’ve gotten out of there.”
When Orange City and EVAC paramedics got to the store they found Van Lester lying on her left side on top of the DVD player, surrounded by shoppers seemingly oblivious to the unconscious woman, said Mark O’Keefe, a spokesman for EVAC Ambulance.
Van Lester was airlifted to Halifax Medical Center in Daytona Beach. Ellzey said her sister will likely remain hospitalized for days.
Ellzey said Wal-Mart officials called to ask about her sister, and the store apologized and offered to put a DVD player on hold for her.
Wal-Mart Stores spokeswoman Karen Burk said she had never heard of a such a melee during a sale.
“We are very disappointed this happened,” Burk said. “We want her to come back as a shopper.”

This is the reason why I don’t go out shopping on the day after Thanksgiving. 3AM? She must have gotten up at 2AM in order to get down there. Maybe earlier if she had to come from a far distance. Another news story said the DVD players were the APEX brand and were going for $29 at that particular store. I have one of those DVD players. We got it for around $40 or so a few months ago. Why was any of this so important? Celebrate your Thanksgiving with a rampage at the local Wal-Mart.
Someone on another discussion board suggested this. Go down to the local Walmart on the Friday after Thanksgiving with a video camera. Film any fights that break out among customers over merchandise, who’s first in line…etc. Sell video to local TV station and make $$$.
[Update: December 5, 2003] Actually this lady has filed multipled claims at various businesses over the past several years. She might be a frequent faller.

Win one for the Cubbies

It was meant to be. Serves them right. I can remember many a Spring day during my childhood tuning in to WGN Chicago cable station expecting to see my favorite cartoons, but instead being greeted with Major League Baseball. You see, WGN is affiliated with the Cubs about as much as the Braves are with TBS Superstation. I hated that.
Cubs. Never win anything. Most of their years, they’ve been a mediocre team.
The fan? Well, he probably did what anyone else would have done when they get caught up in the excitement of the moment. Pretty stupid, but it’s a split second decision that probably made a difference in the game.
I never had ever understood the appeal of baseball. A whole lotta nothing if you ask me. I remember when the Today Show made a huge deal about them installing lights at Wrigley Field. Live remotes with Bryant Gumbel. Night games at Wrigley were a sign of the times. No one needed to pull a Ferris Bueller and skip work/school for a Cubs game anymore. They needed night games to attract more fans.
The whole episode with the Marlins and the Cubs reminds me of that scene in Back to the Future II where Marty is in the future…year 2015 and he sees the news about the Cubs beating Florida in the world series.

2 years

“The reason we were attacked, the reason these people are dead, these people are missing and dead, and they weren’t doing anything wrong, they were living their lives, they were going to work, they were traveling, they were doing what they normally do. As I understand it (and my understanding of this is vague at best), another smaller group of people stole some airplanes and crashed them into buildings. And we’re told that they were zealots, fueled by religious fervor… religious fervor. And if you live to be a thousand years old, will that make any sense to you?”
David Letterman – 9/17/01

I still don’t understand it, Dave.

The 10Cs again

I’m kinda dreading things tomorrow. I’m supposed to stop by and show a computer novice how to update their website. What the likely scenerio is I’ll show them how to update it, the person will initually understand it, but forget how to update it when it comes time to make changes on their website later on. Nobody ever said webdesign was fixed up in a nice neat little package. There are so many steps and variables involved in it. If a person doesn’t necessarily understand computer OR is unable to follow specific directions, then it doesn’t really do me any good to show them.
Then there’s the 10 Commandments controversy again. A friend and I had a long instant messenger discussion on the whole subject. My friend’s justification for it was the 10C’s historic precidence…that our basic western laws are based on it. Something that I would probably be likely to lean toward. However specifically only 30% of the Commandments are laws are in our country. The others are either overtly religious or just good positive living (thou shalt not covet). If our laws are based on it, then 100% of the 10C’s would be found in our laws, and that just isn’t the case.
I’m not for taking morals out of government. I guess its the package in which these type of morals are put in place. You don’t need a 5,280-pound monument and a state justice saying he’s the new MLK to have morals or God’s laws in government. My problem is that I think those supporting the 10C’s in the Bama Court are doing it as a knee jerk reaction. Like sheep being told what to say and what to do, they stand up there and make a huge show over it, without actually sitting down and thinking why they are doing it. If you have a good reason (such as the historic precidence) for supporting the display of Ten Commandments in a public place, good for you. Otherwise if you are just following the crowd then you are doing it for the wrong reason.
I think there were about as many protestors as cameramen up there. The Commandments monument was originally put up there overnight. If something is so right, then why would it need to be placed there in a clandestine sort of way? Judge Moore may indeed be a publicity seeker.
I do take part in a discussion board run by some conservative friends of mine. Lately the entire discussion board has been more or less news about the 10C’s. I’ve thought about posting my thoughts on the matter, however I figure I’d probably be jumped all over for espousing an opinion different from the usual that you’d hear on Foxnews. Ever since I was called hypocritical for listening to instrumental music in my everyday life and worshipping with accapella music, I’ve shyed away from posting there.
I guess ever since I was threatened to take this website down, I’ve always been kind of skeptical toward religious matters. I find myself questioning things alot more often. Why is it wrong? Because you say its wrong or because God says its wrong? Its sorta sad because a certain amount of trust has been lost in the dogfight. I question people’s inner motives alot more these days. It may be something that I never stop doing.
[update 8/29/03]:
“Get your hands off God, God haters!” Ah yes. Somehow the 10C monument has become God in some people’s eyes. Isn’t there something against this in Exodus? Golden calf? Does that ring a bell?

The Ten Commandments

I think it is my time to weigh in on this Ten Commandments controversy. Let me explain it this way.
What you’ve got in Alabama is a Christian majority – which aspires to obey the Ten Commandments. Somewhere in Los Angeles you might have a Korean majority in a locality who aspire to some kind fo Taoism commands. Elsewhere in Hawaii you might have a Japanese majority who espouses Buddism values. In New York City there’s probably a large group of people who look toward the Koran as their holy book. If I were in the minority at any of these places, and a religious document foreign to my beliefs was to be put up in the local courthouse, I would feel uncomfortable.
Similarily, I just don’t think the Ten Commandments have a place in a public building. The pro-commandments camp would say that this country was founded on Christian values. And I would agree with them somewhat. However in today’s society not everyone is a Christian and therefore would not agree with one religion being held above all others in government buildings.
I do believe in the Ten Commandments. Most of them are still in effect today, except for maybe the Sabbath one. I certainly don’t see anyone not working on Saturday.

“Six days you shall labor and do all your work, but the seventh day is the Sabbath of the LORD your God. In it you shall do no work.”

And if you are thinking Sunday is the new Sabbath, think about it this way. Do you go out to eat on Sunday? Do you buy gas for your vehicle on Sunday? By buying merchandise or services are you making a market where other people would have to work in order to serve you?
What is bothersome is Roy Moore is trying to make himself out to be another Martin Luther King. He certainly isn’t. He has disobeyed an upper courts orders and he’ll have to pay a price for that. The monument itself was installed at around 12:30AM one early morning. Clandistine? Why would you have to sneak around and put up a monument that not everyone is going to agree with?
