Friday Five: Halloween

1. What was your first Halloween costume?
When I was 6 months old, my parents dressed me in my sister’s infant clothes for Halloween. I don’t even want to remember that.
2. What was your best costume and why?
Like I said, I don’t think I ever had a really good costume. Usually it was some lame mask.
3. Did you ever play a trick on someone who didn’t give you a treat?
I can honestly say that I have never toilet papered someone’s house.
4. Do you have any Halloween traditions? (ie: Family pumpkin carving, special dinner before trick or treating, etc.)
Not really. When we were younger, my sister and I would go over to my grandparent’s house on Halloween. Just to show them our costumes. She’d always give us Juicy Fruit chewing gum.
5. Share your favorite scary story…real or legend!
I don’t have any scary stories.
I do remember how they’d have a Fall Festival at my elementary school. Along with a haunted house. Sometimes they’d put the haunted house in the cafeteria. Sometimes on the stage in the gym. Once it was in an unused portable. Just a very few times I gathered enough courage to go through the haunted houses. I don’t remember too much. Mostly just skeletons with strings and someone jumping out scaring you at the end. That’s it.

Friday Five: Sports

1. Do you watch sports? If so, which ones?
I don’t watch sports. Maybe for the first few days I’ll watch the Olympics. But after a few minutes sports kinda loose my interest.
2. What/who are your favorite sports teams and/or favorite athletes?
Athletes are overpaid for what they do. I don’t have any especially favorite teams or athletes. Sorry folks.
I can probably name a few players from the local teams, simply because around here sports is king and you can’t help but to ingest some kind of sports information through osmosis.
3. Are there any sports you hate?
Baseball. I cannot understand anyone wanting to watch it. Game after game. Boring. Golf is too. But everyone always mentions golf as being boring.
4. Have you ever been to a sports event?
Actually yesterday I went to a Predators hockey game. My first NHL hockey game. There’s a first time for any one of us. I had been to a Nashville Knights game before. But it was a long time ago and very poor seats. These seats were the $69 variety. (Thanks Zack!)
I’ve been to a couple of UT football games (an event within itself, even if you don’t like football). A handful of Lipscomb basketball games (if only to be eligible for the $100 they were giving away).
I won tickets to a Oilers game at Vanderbilt statium once. That was an event. Oilers lost to the Bears. I was disappointed too.
5. Do/did you play any sports (in school or other)? How long did you play?
I was in marching band. That in itself should be considered a sport since you are about as active as an athlete. That being the case I had to attend all of the high school football games, which in itself is a minor accomplishment.

Friday Five: Music

1. Who is your favorite singer/musician? Why?
I’d rather concentrate on bands themselves rather than individual musicians.
Better than Ezra, Wallflowers, Cracker, Oasis, Lucinda Williams, Son Volt, Ben Folds, Gin Blossoms, INXS, U2
These are bands you’ve never heard of. Once a band gets extraoridinarily popular, then I usually stop listening to it. The exception to this is U2, which will probably always have a cult following.
2. What one singer/musician can you not stand? Why?
Anything R&B or Rap. I just don’t get it. It all sounds the same. Funky bass line and generic lyrics. Nothing special here. Move along. Nothing to see here.
3. If your favorite singer wasn’t in the music business, do you think you would still like him/her as a person?
Not necessarily. For example, I really like the band Oasis. I like their music, yet the actual attitude of the members of the band are pretty lousy. They call themselves the greatest rock band ever, which is hardly the case. Good music; bad attitudes.
4. Have you been to any concerts? If yes, who put on the best show?
Complete list of concerts I’ve been to
Some of the best shows have been Better Than Ezra, where they get crowd participation and do some cover songs. This is opposed to the slickly produced Tom Petty and Aerosmith concerts I’ve been to.
5. What are your thoughts on downloading free music online vs. purchasing albums? Do you feel the RIAA is right in its pursuit to stop people from dowloading free music?
I plead the 5th. 🙂

Friday Five: Online Habits

1. How much time do you spend online each day?
Too much
2. What is your browser homepage set to?
Google.
It used to be set to Yahoo. Then I wised up and figured out Yahoo was inferior. You can just about find anything on Google these days.
3. Do you use any instant messaging programs? If so, which one(s)?
Trillian. It’s the only one worth using. I could go on and on about the inferiority of AIM, but I won’t. I keep a copy of all the major messengers on my computer for testing purposes.
4. Where was your first webpage located?
Geocities: circa 1997
I think everyone had their webpage on Geocities at one time or another. Until they stopped letting users FTP to their sites. It was assimilated into the Yahoo borg.
5. How long have you had your current website?
Since Feb. 2001 (has it been that long?)

Friday Five: Friends

1. Do you remember your first best friend? Who was it?
My cousin Chris and I were first close friends. “Friends” I guess might mean someone who is not family. So you might or might not count cousins as friends. But for the sake of this entry, I’m going to count cousins as friends.
Chris and I grew up in the same neighborhood. I remember cutting through neighbor’s yards to get to get to his house during our elementary years.
When we got into junior high and high school we took our different trails. I took band and he took p.e. We had different sets of friends. Even toward the end of elementary school we were going our different ways.
2. Are you still in touch with this person?
I’m still in contact with him, although not a regular basis. We have our own lives and don’t get together as much.
3. Do you have a current close friend?
I have close friends. I’m not into the childish thing of saying this person is my best friend or something stupid like that. I have friends for different situations. I have church friends; friends from high school; friends from college; friends from church camp. Most of them are mostly on the same level of closeness, although the church friends are slightly closer because I know them on a different level.
One thing I’ve learned recently is that is it important not to get too close to friends. It can hurt when they tend to turn their back on you. This hasn’t happened too often. It is rare. But when someone does let you down…someone who you trusted…it can really be worrisome.
4. How did you become friends with this person?
See above.
5. Is there a friend from your past that you wish you were still in contact with? Why?
Sure. I can’t think of any right now.
There were several friends from elementary school who decided to go to a different school for junior high or high school. So we lost touch and never got back in touch.

Friday Five: Achievements

Time for a Friday Five. The past few fives have been lame. But this one is a bit better.
1. What do you most want to be remembered for?
Making a difference. My tombstone should read “He made a difference.” No matter how small I want to be a part of something.
2. What quotation best fits your outlook on life?
The truth shall set you free.
3. What single achievement are you most proud of in the past year?
Making a difference (no matter how small) in a young person’s life. That is what I’ll remember from last year. I’m thinking about a specific occurence, but I *may* have made a difference in other people’s life. At least I hope so. Maybe I’m just fooling myself. I don’t know.
4. What about the past ten years?
Graduating from Lipscomb with a good GPA.
5. If you were asked to give a child a single piece of advice to guide them through life, what would you say?
Trust in God but lock your car.

Friday Five: The Phone

1. Do you like talking on the phone? Why or why not?
I don’t like talking on the phone. For what its worth, phone conversations are not efficent enough. Much rather use email or instant messenger.
2. Who is the last person you talked to on the phone?
My father. He calls over here when he doesn’t have anything to do at work.
3. About how many telephones do you have at home?
Four. I have a rotary phone which is just old enough to be cool. Who else has a working rotary phone in their house?
4. Have you encountered anyone who has really bad phone manners? What happened?
“Bad phone manners?” I’m not on the phone enough to know about bad phone manners. I guess hanging up on someone is rude and insensitive. So that’s probably the extent of it. Rarely happens. Most of the time people are able to handle themselves well…or at least in a civil manner.
5. Would you rather pick up the phone and call someone or write them an e-mail or a letter? Why or why not?
Email is much more convenient. Many times simple questions could be answered without a phone call. Phone calls are inconvenient and cumbersome.
Phone calls are only good when you are far away and need the answer to something RIGHT NOW.
Otherwise I’d almost prefer email or instant messenger over a phone call.

Friday Five: Last Things

1. What was the last song you heard?
Fatboy Slim – “Praise You.” They wore out that song when it first came out. But now it’s cool because I haven’t heard it in a while.
2. What were the last two movies you saw?
Bourne Identity and Changing Lanes.
Both were ok movies. I did find that just because a movie has Ben Affleck or Matt Damon doesn’t mean it will automatically be a good movie. J-Lo take note.
3. What were the last three things you purchased?
Printer cartridge for Phil’s printer. (Thursday) I’ll get reimbursed later.
Papa John’s Pizza (Wednesday)
Pizza at Bellacino’s (Monday) (yes I enjoy eating pizza frequently)
4. What four things do you need to do this weekend?
I might upgrade some of the computers at church….particularly David’s computer which could get really spruced up with Windows 2K.
Worship on Sunday. I’m a traditional kind of guy.
Probably write in this lame weblog.
Surf the net.
I lead a very boring life.
5. Who are the last five people you talked to?
My parents (2), David, Phil, and Carole. (Hey I was just at church and ministers and church secretaries were there)

Friday Five: Reading

1. What is your favorite type of literature to read (magazine, newspaper, novels, nonfiction, poetry, etc.)?
I hate reading fiction. I have never enjoyed it. Perhaps it was how I was forced to read them during my school years. Reading comprehension was not my favorite activity.
I read news sites on the web mostly. Always searching for new information. As far as hard copy print goes, I read magazines and newspapers.
2. What is your favorite novel?
I don’t like novels. I have only read a handful of them. Michael Crichton’s “Jurassic Park.” And that was only because I was on vacation without a tv to watch….in the tri-cities area of East Tennessee.
I’ve read excepts of William Faulkner’s “As I Lay Dying.” Seemed sorta interesting. But like I said, I don’t enjoy reading fiction stuff.
3. Do you have a favorite poem? (Share it!)
Are some Bible verses considered poems? Prose or poems? I don’t know. One of my favorites is Micah 6:8.
Otherwise I don’t really have a favorite poem. Or at least one that I can think of right now….
4. What is one thing you’ve always wanted to read, or wish you had more time to read?
Nothing. I don’t enjoy reading.
5. What are you currently reading?
Someone else’s webpage.

Friday Five: Possessions

1. What is your most prized material possession?
Probably my CDs full of digital pictures I’ve taken. Those are irreplaceable.
2. What item, that you currently own, have you had the longest?
My Pooh bear. Had since I was a very young child. It’s around here somewhere.
3. Are you a packrat?
Definitely. I find it hard to throw away things. I get this tendency from my great grandmother. One time she offered my parents their wedding cake. Mind you, they had been married for 20 years. 20 year old wedding cake. Ugh.
4. Do you prefer a spic-and-span clean house? Or is some clutter necessary to avoid the appearance of a museum?
Some clutter is necessary. I’ve been to those “museum” houses before and wasn’t impressed.
5. Do the rooms in your house have a theme? Or is it a mixture of knick-knacks here and there?
Nope. No particular room has a theme, yet I don’t feel as though knick-knacks are scattered throughout. Does any guy really describe their house’s objects as “knick-knacks” ?
