Link of the Moment

What’s new here? Well I’ve just placed a new Photo of the Moment online…..a friend pointed out this sign to me last night.
Also you might have noticed the “Link of the Moment” on the main front page of this site. Basically anything I find interesting, unusual, or unique, I’ll link to. I can’t always completely go through the entire site and make sure it is appropriate for all viewers. So with any link to any outside site, the viewer should be aware that a link is not necessarily an endorsement by me. Use at your own risk.

Viral Email

Yesterday I got an email that contained a virus. It was sent to the church’s email address. Luckily my virus scan and my keen sense for peculiar emails caught it before it was opened. When getting mail for the church’s email address, I’m very careful about what attachments I open. Since everyone seems to have the church’s address in their address book, I’ve found that it always gets the latest virus whenever a new one comes out.
The best step for combating replicating viruses is not to use Microsoft Outlook. Virus writers tend to expoit some of the automatic features of Outlook in order to spread the virus.
On my agenda this week is going to Lipscomb’s first basketball game in the new arena on Tuesday night. Our youth minister had extra tickets to it, so I decided to go. I’m a bit surprised that they’re promoting Lipscomb among the church youth group. Lately it seems as if Freed-Hardeman University is the only university for Christians to go to (at least according to certain people at church). The youth group has already made half a dozen trips to Freed Hardeman since the Summer. As far as I can tell, this is the first trip to my alma mata (Lipscomb). Both our youth minister and pulpit minister are from FHU and I’m sure FHU has been heavily promoted amoung the youth.

The Most Obnoxious Elementary School Webpage

Why do webpage designers not test their creations in Netscape as well as Internet Explorer? Time and time again I’ve found pages displayed improperly (or not displayed at all) because I’m using Netscape to browse the page.
I found possibly the most obnoxious elementary school webpage out there….Rutland Elementary School. It’s loud, cheesy, and viewable only in Internet Explorer. Their main page has a really loud wav file of “Let’s get ready to Rumble.” The Macromedia Flash plugin is waaaaaayyyyyy over used. When I browse the page, I get nagged to install the Comet Cursor…..which is a well known piece of spyware.

Mirroring Program

I found a great little mirroring program on the web. These mirroring programs crawl user specified websites and save the html and graphic files to your hard drive for easy access later. Many times free homepage providers will delete webpages due to lack of updates. I’ve already seen a few of my friends’ webpages get deleted due to not being updated. I’ve mirrored several of my friends’ webpages to my hard drive to access later. I might end up placing them up on the web for nostalgia purposes. I’ve already placed the junior high’s webpage (a version from May 1998) on the web. The site itself is pretty sad. You can tell whoever did it originally didn’t have a clue as far as site design goes. Time and time again I have seen local school websites that are poorly designed. More often than not, the webpages contain outdated information, bad photos, and annoying animated gifs.

Computer Donations

The retreat with my church was fun. It was a good chance to get to know other people at church.
I’m donating my old computer to church to use for the audio visual ministry. The computer has been sitting unused for several months. Our current computer at church is probably 4 years old and is as slow as Christmas.
I would write more, but it’s getting late and I need some sleep.
