Target

March 6th, 2006, was a landmark date in Mt. Juliet history. It was on that particular day that Target officially opened in Providence Place. “Providence” is the type of retail environment that makes community leaders salivate with all the potential tax revenue. Once fully opened, the shopping center will contain a Belk, Best Buy, Petsmart, the state’s largest Kroger, TJ Maxx, among a handful of other tenates. Target was just one of the first to open.
It was just few days ago that I made my expedition to Company Target. I bought 2 items – a 12 Pack of 7up and Sunkist for $2 each. The receipt was the type of thing my sister would take pinking shears to and post in her scrapbook – a retail receipt with a Mt. Juliet address on it. Mt. Julietians had been wanting this for years. Yet Walmart or Kmart even was not interested in the retail business in Mt. Juliet and prefered to have their business just across the county line in Davidson county. It was almost like they were thumbing their noses at Mt. Julietians, thinking the community had no interest, or no ability to support retail establishment. So they built their stores in Lebanon and Hermitage making Mt. Julietians drive 30 minutes or more down the road for their retail shopping experience.
Yet with the addition of Target and others in Providence, suddenly Walmart is interested in Mt. Juliet, in a spot of land across the street from Arby’s and Captain D’s. It’ll be a Super Walmart (or so I’m told).
My first experience with Target was 20 years ago. Target was a hard to reach place 45 minutes away in Rivergate. We would go there for school supplies sales. Somehow at that point Target was just another Big K clone.
Yet Target matured and became what it is today, a fresh alternative to the Walmart circus. I don’t think I’ve seen junk offered for sale at Target, at least not in the droves that Walmart sells it. Target has wide aisles, price checking machines, and competitent employees.
I am impressed and bewildered at the same time at the bohemoth known at Walmart. Why do so many people go in droves to Walmart? Why has Walmart convinced everyone in Mt. Juliet to drive 15 minutes further, past 2 Dollar Generals, in order to buy their health a beauty products? I have no idea. Maybe its because it has everything under one roof. Motor oil, fried chicken, Scotch tape. It is all there.
Yet Target has trumped Walmart in some respects. Walmart is known as a redneck gathering. Walmart is synonymous with cheap stuff. While Target shoppers don’t have to be afraid to mention to their neighbors that they bought their coffee table or kitchen chairs at Target.
I will continue to shop at the Mt. Juliet Target as long as it is easily accessible. It doesn’t matter that they might sell shampoo at 50 cents higher than Walmart. It is the fact that I don’t have to park so far away from the store entrance. It is also the fact that I don’t have to wait longer than 5 minutes in the checkout line.

Muslim for 30 Days

I saw an episode of 30 Days, Morgan Spurlock’s new show on FX. You’ll remember Morgan from Supersize Me, the movie which convinced quite a few people to stop eating McDonald’s all together.
The premise of this show is the fish out of water concept. Take a person and put them into a totally different environment for 30 days.
So this particular episode show a Christian from West Virginia living as a Muslim for 30 days. He had to participate in everything a typical Muslim would do for 30 days. He lived with a Muslim family, ate Muslim approved food, and participated in Muslim rituals.
And during all this I discovered something about Muslims:
Islam promotes Obsessive Compulsive Disorder
What other religion would systematically compel their followers to pray 5 times a day at specific times. And have a certain way of praying. Prostraiting oneself on the floor…toward Mecca. Which makes one think, are you worshipping Allah or Mecca?
Also Muslims have to eat approved meat. It’s somewhat like Kosher meat that Jews have to eat. However at slaughterhouses, when slaughtering the animal, the butcher must turn the animal’s carcass toward the east and utter a phrase in Arabic just before killing it. Why this is so important to God, I don’t know. But I just seems a bit compulsive to me.
Part of the show dealt with everyday Muslims refusal to condemn, or even apologize for extremist views. The typical Muslim view is that these extremists are the fringe group. However Muslim leaders don’t seem to urge compromise. If anything they look the other direction while embassies are burned over Danish editorial cartoons.
Still the concept of a religious rules being very very close to OCD, is not foreign to some Christians. Unfortunately some Christians tend to look at their religion as a set of rules which MUST be followed or else one ends up being punished in Hell. I used to look at life that way. What I missed was the concept of grace. You’ll never be good enough for heaven. But you are made perfect through God. So live your live the best you know how and don’t let rules get in the way.

Monster

Monster is the tragic story about how a woman can degenerate to a shell of a human being who becomes a serial killer.
Aileen was a prostitute in Florida. She has almost no friends, except for Thomas, owner of a bar who she sometimes frequents. It is Selby, a lesbian who befriends her due to sexual interest, but also because she too needed a friend.
During the time of Selby and Aileen’s relationship, Aileen kills one of her Johns who was abusive to her. Initually it was self defence but somehow after the initual wounding it eventually turned into anger. Just weeks later Aileen sees the headlines in a local paper saying the police had no idea who did it. Aileen knew that she could kill a man and get away with it.
And so the killing spree began. Whenever Aileen needed money to live her dream, she killed one of her customers. Maybe it was out of desperation. Maybe it was out of revenge toward her abusive father. Together Aileen and Selby traveled around as nomads living in hotels and cheap apartments. Initually Selby was too naive to know what was going on. She regarded Aileen as some type of hero figure in her life, something she never had. Aileen too, saw Selby as a true friend, whom she never had.
What impacted me so much about the movie was how ugly the deep underworld can become. And how one human being can sink so low into killing people just to stay alive in a sense.
Initually it is unclear Selby’s role in the movie. She is the dimissive follower in the movie. She always looks to Aileen for advice and direction. Yet eventually we see Selby taking the law into her own hands and deciding to testify against her.
The real Aileen was excuted in 2002 for killing 6 men throughout 1989 to 1992. She refused her last meal and opted instead for a cup of coffee.
Charlize Theron transformation is phenomenal. She played Aileen in such a believeable fashion. We feel her pain. We see the struggles she goes through. Charlize gained 30 pounds for the role. No doubt heavy makeup was used to make such a beautiful woman into such a monster.

John Mark Williamson

littlejohnJohn Mark Williamson – born 2/1/2006 at 12:23 PM, Baptist Hospital, Nashville.
So he looks like Ellen. Too soon to tell if he will act like Ellen.
I managed to drop by the hospital. Park in the farthest parking spot. Then find my way to the maternity ward. Probably the only happiest place in a hospital.
So it was a good day.

I miss my church

Just looking back I’ve realized that I miss my home church. You see, somehow my eyes have been opened to how things really do work. Unfortunately I’ve seen the nasty side of things, which I don’t want to revisit. I wish I could go back to a simplier time. The only thing that should matter is one’s personal relationship with the Almighty.
So I miss how things were. I miss the innocence of it all. I miss being able to trust people. I know that I’m a stronger man for having gone through certain negative situations. I’ve grown because of it. Yet this growth was unexpected, but terribly needed. Growth is never expected. Sometimes it comes as a slap in the face.
Churches, like all earthly institutions, will have its faults. I don’t know of a perfect church out there. Churches are made up of imperfect people who are made perfect through divine intervention.
Maybe its not my home church that has changed. Maybe its me that changed.
And maybe I need to realize that it’s not *my* church, but the bride of Jesus.

Queue the Footloose Music

I was going through some old church bulletins and found this article from April 29, 1984. (queue Footloose theme)

Parents Please Don’t Let Your Teens Go to the Prom
Dancing is a sin. Wait, don’t quit reading. Let me explain. Simply defined, “Dancing consists int he rhythmical movement of any or all parts of the body in accordance with some scheme of of individual or concerted action which is expressive of emotion or ideas.” – Encyclopedia Britanica. Notice, “…body movements…expressive of emotions….” This is the problem of dancing, whether it be the embracing or standing apart and moving the body. The real appeal of dancing is the sex appeal. if not, why do men not dance with men and girls with girls? Can a person with normal sexual drives embrace another or see the movements of the modern dance without being excited? If one can, can his partner? If both can, how long could they? If both can, what about their influence? What does sexual excitement lead to?
Not only that, but dancing is scriptually wrong! It is clearly in the class of “lasciviousness” which means among other things, “…inciting to lust or wantonness.” – J. H. Thayer. Lasciviousness is condemned as one of the works of the flesh, Galatians 5:19-20. It is condemned in 2 Corinthians 12:21; Ephesians 4:19; 1 Peter 4:3 and Jude 1:4. Galatians says that “…they which do such things shall not inherit the kingdom of God.” Does this not mean something to a Christian parent who loves the soul and morals of his child? Does this not mean something to Christian young people who want so much to please God?
Supervising the dance cannot make it right either. Supervision cannot control the mind of the dancers. All the school teachers, police, and parents in town can’t do it. If it’s wrong in the night club, it’s wrong in the school gym.
Parents, please, please, consider these things and impress the importance on the minds of your children. DON’T LET THEM GO TO THE PROM.
The 20th Annual Junior/Senior Christian Banquet will be Friday Evening, May 4 at the Opryland Hotel. Parents, encourange your young people to attend this banquet.
–The Wingate Winner

The line about “Supervision cannot control the mind of the dancers” is classic. Supervision cannot control the minds of attendees to the Junior/Senior Christian Banquet either. Who knows? Those attending the banquet might have an impure thought about their date.
I’m not going to argue about lasciviousness being a sin. Obviously it is a sin. However putting so much emphasis on one act – dancing at the prom – is overkill. In today’s day and age there are alot worse things which could be done besides dancing…

Giving this Season

Two events in my childhood make me remember the sprit of giving in the holiday season. It also reminds me of how fortunate we are.
During 4th and 5th grade in my Sunday School class, we would collect food for needy families. Then during a certain Saturday we would deliver the food to families in the area. Afterwards we were treated to a free meal at Staggs’ Pharmacy. Strangly enough I don’t remember too much about the families we delivered to.
At the time my church had about 300 members, so sitting a large cylinder for food collection outside in the foyer wasn’t all that much trouble. Sure, it had to be emptied ever so often, but it certainly wasn’t all that big of a deal. Now the church has around 700+ members. We have our own food room year round, so the collection of food by 4th and 5th graders has somewhat lost its importance. I’m not sure which was more important.: The delivery of the food to the needy, or the lesson it taught us in collecting and distributing it. I suppose the food delivery was somewhat of a band aid remedy for the needy.
Also in 4th grade my class at school “adopted” a needy family for the holiday season. I guess it helped that the family had kids our age. Throughout the month of December we collected food and toys for the family. Then on a particular night, the entire class plus some room mothers went over to personally deliver the goods to the family. Let me tell you, it was awkward. The parents were, of course, slightly embarrassed to have to accept a handout so their kids could have a decent Christmas. Their house had no carpet and was somewhat dark inside. The father had a job which he had to walk to each day. I wonder what happened to that family. I wonder if the cycle of poverty continued with the kids, perhaps dropping out of school and having to take low end jobs. I guess I could hope they somehow got out of this depressing cycle.
Two things come to mind in remembering this. One is that families in poverty need help year round, and not just in the Christmas season when somehow we are feeling generous. Also this help shouldn’t just be a band-aid. These people need job skills. Give a man a fish and he will eat for a day; Teach a man to fish and he will eat forever.
The 2nd thing is that the act itself was a lesson for me at a young age. These families probably don’t remember who gave them food during December of 1984. However here it is 21 years later and I still remember the act.

The case against Wikipedia

Case in point: Dinosaur Retired journalist finds biographical article on Wikipedia. The article points to him as a suspected assasin of Robert and John Kennedy. He becomes very upset, demands Wikipedia’s owners remove the offending information and delete it from the history files. He writes an editorial in USA Today. Then he begins a effort to find the real killers find the anonymous editor in order to “confront” them.
Wikipedia is an online encyclopedia which anyone can edit. In this case an anonymous editor with a Bellsouth IP. When Seigenthaler saw the misinformation, why didn’t he just edit him himself instead of creating a huge stink about it? Note during an NPR interview, he was asked why he didn’t edit it. His answer was somewhat hypocritical saying it wasn’t his problem to edit Wikipedia. Listen to it here.
This time it was personal, after all he was a pallbearer in Bobby’s funeral. Before Seigenthaler probably didn’t even know or care what Wikipedia was. Suddenly it is an issue. Mainstream media is reporting that people can use the internet to post unverifiable information. Why is this a shock to people?
What is amazingly strange about this is Seigenthaler is founder of the First Amendment Center at Vanderbilt. Yep, I know the First Amendment doesn’t cover libel, but yet I don’t see why this is so much of an issue. Move on, John. Move on.
Wikipedia’s information process has been described by its founder, Jimmy Wales, as making a sausage. The outcome can be very tasty. But you really don’t want to see what goes on behind the scenes. I suspect Seigenthaler’s wiki article will be locked for quite some time because he has offended quite a few wiki users. It was bound to happen sometime. Wiki was around long enough for someone to find some disinformation, then sue Wikipedia for defamation of character.

The rogue editor has been revealed. But does anyone care?

Everybody’s Gauntlet

The latest Real World/Road Rules Challenge is afoot on MTV. This time its the Gauntlet 2. The setting is the Caribean island of Tobago with a pirate theme. I perceive MTV is trying very hard to make it seem like Survivor.
After the usual competition to choose team captains, the real drama happens in the last 5 minutes of the episode. The cast does what any group of publicity seakers do. They get drunk and have sex with each other. This is nothing unusual because it seems to happen on every RW/RR Challenge.
Jo, who appeared on the Real World San Francisco gets very upset at the activites of her fellow costars. She freaked out; called home; and went in to get her bags. Ruthie, yes Ruthie – the same person who practicially drank herself to death on Real World Hawaii – tries to reason with Jo on why she is so upset. Jo refuses to talk to Ruthie because she feels she doesn’t have to give a reason for leaving. In true BMP style the episode ends with a cliffhanger, with the next episode showing Jo calling the police.
What the cast members and many viewers don’t understand is that a large part of the Real World San Francisco focused on Jo’s restraining order against her ex-husband. Obviously she has had substantial conflict with an ex-lover which might have even turned violent. No wonder she has negative feelings toward the mix of sex and drunkeness which was exhibited in the house that night. Jo should have never showed up to this Gauntlet.
The sad thing is that I indentify with Jo. Maybe we all have at one point in our lives. I’ve wanted to leave perceived hostile situations before. The thing is that it is perceived to be hostile. Perception and reality is much much different. Others might have wanted to help Jo, but they just didn’t know how to handle it. They don’t know her background. As Timmy put it, “I don’t know Jo from a ham sandwich.” And so we see that ignorance and drunken orgies rule the Gauntlet.

Thank you myspace.com

Thank you, myspace.com for revealing things about my fellow classmates from high school and college that I never wanted to know. Way too much information. Surprisingly enough many of my high school classmates have managed to get married, have kids, and then get divorced in the short 12 years that we’ve been out of high school.
We did things that we swore we wouldn’t do. We tried to not make the same mistakes that our parents made. Yet here we are. My peers are just like any other generation. Divorced and seemingly unhappy about themselves and ranting about it on myspace.com.
Myspace.com is not only a social networking utlity, it’s also a repository for knowing too much information on that aquaintance from high school. Don’t get what I’m saying? Try doing a search for your high school or college. Then narrow it down to your age range. You’ll find some information which you’ll sigh and say to yourself “I wish I didn’t know that…”
I would have signed up, but I’d rather not post that much information about myself (rather posting it here, oh the irony). Plus I’m not so sure I’d want my old classmates getting in touch with me. Most of the time I keep up with the people that I care about, and let the others just stay on the wayside. Nice knowing you. You were rude to me in high school, why would I want to know you now?

Update 12/5/2005:
Myspace.com has also become one of the very few websites that has managed not only to crash my browser, but my whole computer. I was surfing around this morning on the networking site and hit my back button on my browser. Suddenly my computer screen went dark and my computer rebooted. It must be the ability of users to post embeded videos. I’ve surfed around myspace.com and the words “verbal diarrhea” come to mind.
